Open Letter to Dog Owners

Did you ever stop to think, “Man’s best friend” is not just that? A dog is the best friend ANY human, man or woman, boy or girl can have.
Unconditional love, no questions asked. Not in a good mood? Your dog will understand and be there for you. Your dog makes very few demands, but gives you tons of love with very little effort on your part.
Having been raised on an Iowa farm, I’ve had dogs all my life with names like Trixie, Spot, and Brownie. I always had a dog near me up until entering the Air Force.

After My Air Force Days We Moved to California

Dad had already moved to California and my family came to join him. He had a beautiful Golden Cocker Spaniel named Lady. What a wonderful dog for the children! They would lie on her and she would just lie so still for them. She even let our parakeet walk on her, defying nature entirely. She was such a loving, caring dog. When she died we buried her in our back yard, where she is to this day.

Now to The Last Dog I’ll Ever Own

I’m talking about the replacement for Lady. She was Trudy. A black Terrier so full of love it pains me to this day to even talk about her.
She was a member of our family for 17 years. One of those years was a bonus from God. She watched over our family and home like a private security force. Whenever anyone set foot on our property, Trudy would bark to alert us. She was a perfect burglar alarm. Perfect for children, never came close to biting anyone, but always watching out for us. She was the perfect companion for Dad in his last years in which he suffered Alzheimer’s. Trudy was like a full time nurse and watchdog. She was a wonderful comfort to Dad. She would literally go to bed with him at night and sleep beside him. Those were very tough years for our family. Trudy was wonderful and made Dad’s last days so much more comfortable than anyone else could have ever done.

 Trudy Becomes Mine

After Dad left us, Trudy became my constant companion. Whenever I was home, she was on my lap or at my feet. Everywhere I went she went with me. Every single evening, rain or shine, we went for a walk around the block. When I would get her Flex Leash, she would stand on her rear feet, her tail wagging furiously and wait for me to hook the leash to her collar. That was the highlight of our day for both of us. We would even do it if I came home at midnight. I can still see the look in her eyes when I would get the leash.

 Serious Illness at Age 16

Trudy became very ill when she was 16. The vet couldn’t seem to get her cured. Finally one night she was so bad, we had to take her to the Emergency Vet. There was quite a crowd in the waiting room when we got there, so we had to wait our turn.

She Died in My Arms and Was Revived!

We waited and waited. Trudy was just lying there so still and breathing so heavily. Suddenly she simply stopped breathing. I really panicked and ran to the door of the Vet’s treatment room yelling and pounding on the door. The Vet came rushing over to us and I explained what happened. He took her and by some miracle revived her. To make a long story short, Trudy spent another year with us. It was our turn to care for her. She spent her almost all of her last year lying on her Dog Warmer. After she ate or came in from outside she would automatically head for her Dog Warmer. It was obvious; the Warmer gave her comfort.  My loving wife Helen cared for her as one of our family. Truthfully, the last year was not a good year for Trudy. Perhaps I made a mistake having her brought back to life, but we had one more year together and it was worth every minute.

 The Moral of the Story

The moral of the story is simply this. We get so much unconditional love from our dog; the least we can do is provide them with the best possible comfort. I read recently, people spend about $6000.00, if they have a dog that lives to be eleven years old. So what I am getting at is simply this: There is no way you can provide more comfort and show the love you have for your dog, than by getting your dog it’s own Dog Warmer so they can, Sleep ON Heat. For less than $50.00 you can provide your dog loving, soothing warmth and comfort, night after night, day after day. I am sure you’ll agree your dog is worth far more than that modest investment in it’s every day comfort.
After the first day or two when you show them their warmer, they will head for it every time it is bedtime. And you will know you have made their life vastly more comfortable. Isn’t that the least you can do?
